New Year's Eve in London: The Complete Guide to the New Year's Eve Fireworks at the London Eye

Want to experience the iconic New Year's Eve fireworks display on the Thames for yourself? Read on for practical tips on how to get tickets in time, which zones to choose, and how to avoid the traffic jam after midnight.

Thinking about welcoming the New Year in one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities? The New Year's Eve fireworks display in London, set off from the iconic London Eye and boats on the River Thames, is a legendary experience. Millions of people around the world watch it live, but standing right on the waterfront under Big Ben has an incredible energy and atmosphere.

But it has one big problem. BUT. The times when it was enough to freely come to the river in the evening are long gone. Today, the entire center is turning into a tightly guarded fortress. In this article, I will share my personal experiences and complete instructions on how to plan the entire evening without unnecessary stress.

How do New Year's Eve fireworks in London work?

If you want to go to London at the last minute without a plan, or you absolutely hate crowds and long waits in winter, it's better to stay home and avoid New Year's Eve in London.

The entire area around the River Thames (from Westminster to Waterloo Bridge) is sealed off 2.5 meter high opaque fence. Previously, up to half a million people came to watch the fireworks without any control. For security reasons, since 2014, the capacity has been limited to 100,000 people and you cannot enter this "guarded fortress" without a ticket.

Fireworks tickets

You can get tickets and all information on the London Metropolitan Municipality website – https://www.london.gov.uk/. Search for „new years eve“ here. Alternatively, try the 2026 page directly – https://www.london.gov.uk/events/london-new-years-eve-2026. I definitely recommend signing up for the newsletter, you will then receive an email notifying you of the start of the pre-sale.

When does the sale start?

  • First wave: The second half of October (in 2026 it is October 23).

  • Second (final) wave: Early November.

Buy tickets as soon as they go on sale. They will sell out within a few dozen minutes, or hours at most.

How much does a ticket cost and what are the zones?

In 2026, the price of tickets is 40 a £55 depending on the selected sector.

ZoneLocationView of the London Eye and Big Ben
Blue zone (Blue)North Embankment (Victoria Embankment)Best direct view directly opposite the London Eye
Pink zone (Pink)Access via Waterloo BridgeGreat view from above from the bridge
Red zone (Red)North Embankment towards TempleSide view of the main stage
Green / White ZoneSouth Bank behind and next to the London EyeUp close, but behind the structure and next to the eye

I recommend targeting the Blue or Pink Zone (and maybe the White Zone), which offer the best experience.

the evening's progress step by step

1. Arrival at the zone

Your ticket will give you a specific entrance corridor. All the nearest tube stations in the ring (Westminster, Embankment, Waterloo) are usually closed. Expect to walk at least 2 km there and back.

2. Time window (20:00 – 22:30)

Gates open at 8:00 PM and they close at 10:30 PM. If you arrive later, the security will not let you in even with a valid ticket. Ideally arrive between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM.

3. Security checks

Upon entry, a personal search is carried out, you pass through a security frame, and the things you bring are checked.

  • What is prohibited: Glass bottles, pyrotechnics, weapons, excess baggage.

  • What is allowed: Small backpacks, food, soft drinks in plastic.

4. The background inside the "fortress"„

There are mobile toilets and hot food stalls in the enclosed area. I saw a small Tesco open near Big Ben. A DJ plays all evening, trying to warm up the crowd and get it going. Time passes surprisingly quickly.

Midnight Show: An Experience You Won't Forget

Just before midnight, the entire zone falls silent and all eyes turn to the Elizabeth Tower. Counting down the last seconds of the old year with the first strike of the bell Big Ben it's goosebumps in its purest form.

It follows about 12-minute pyrotechnic and light show launched from pontoons on the Thames and from the London Eye. The combination of modern music, lights and perfect fireworks makes this moment an unforgettable experience.

Returning from the event: Why is hotel selection key?

Once the fireworks are over, a mass of 100,000 people take to the streets. Around 00:30, the organizers start to warn that the event is over and it is time to leave.

  • Congested traffic: Open metro stations in the wider area will immediately become crowded. Security guards let people onto the trains in small groups, and you can easily spend another hour in the queue outside the station.

  • My tip: Book a hotel within walking distance of the center (a circuit within 2-3 km of Waterloo or Westminster). Within 30 minutes you can walk to your room in peace, while others will freeze in the subway queues or vainly look for an Uber. And if your hotel is further away, don't stop at the first subway stations or bus stops, walk further, it is possible that you will be able to catch a bus there better. I took a walk around Hyde Park at night to the hotel near Paddington.

Can you watch the fireworks in London for free?

If you didn't manage to get tickets, you won't be able to get into the official zone. These places offer a partial view from a distance for free:

  1. Primrose Hill & Parliament Hill (Hampstead Heath): Parks on a hill with a wide panorama of London. The view is distant, but the atmosphere with picnics and people is usually great.

  2. More distant bridges over the Thames: For example, Tower Bridge or Vauxhall Bridge (but they are also quite crowded).

  3. Rooftop bars and restaurants: They require early reservations and the New Year's Eve menu tends to be very expensive.
