I combined business with pleasure and set off <strong>for a language course in Barbados<\/strong>. How did I spend these three weeks?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6506edb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6506edb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Afternoon on Miami Beach<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e19c99f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e19c99f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">Day 18 in Barbados was all about total relaxation at my favorite <strong>Miami Beach<\/strong>, which I have basically right under my house in Oistins. I wasn&#039;t in a hurry after school and just decided to &quot;just&quot; go today.\u201e<strong>beach bum<\/strong>\u201c&quot;, because this is what a decent vacation looks like.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"2\">Miami Beach, which locals call Enterprise Beach, is<strong> ideal place for relaxation<\/strong>. On one side you have a calm surface like in a pool and on the other a little bit of waves for fun. I just slapped myself in the sand there and didn&#039;t do anything at all the whole afternoon.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"3\">It&#039;s also a great place to people-watch, as the local community gathers here. What is interesting is how it got its name.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"7\">As a result of Portuguese navigators finding here in the 16th century <strong>wild fig trees with hanging roots<\/strong>, they named the place &quot;\u201e<strong>Los Barbados<\/strong>\u201c&quot; \u2013 that is, Bearded.\u00a0<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"4\">While most of the surrounding islands have undergone <strong>bloody battles<\/strong> between the Spanish, French and British, Barbados remained remarkably <strong>loyal to one crown<\/strong>. In the year <strong>1625<\/strong> Captain John Powell landed here and two years later the first settlement was established in Holetown.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"5\">Moreover, it is fascinating that the British found the island essentially empty, even though it had been inhabited by native people. So they began to build something that is still nicknamed &quot;\u201e<strong>Little England<\/strong>\u201c&quot;. They built churches, introduced cricket, and created a political system that is among the oldest in the world.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"6\">That&#039;s why Barbados has <strong>third oldest parliament<\/strong> throughout the British Commonwealth. It operates continuously <strong>since 1639<\/strong>. That&#039;s quite a feat when you consider that most modern states didn&#039;t even exist back then.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d936def elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d936def\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Key milestones that shaped the island:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29c6905 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"29c6905\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Oldest parliament:<\/b> The local legislature has been operating continuously since 1639.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Sugar revolution:<\/b> From 1640 onwards, sugar cane began to be grown here, which made the island an economic giant.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"10,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Jewish footprint:<\/b> Refugees from Brazil brought sugar processing technologies here and built one of the oldest synagogues in the world (1654).<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"10,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Oistins Agreement:<\/b> In 1652, a charter was signed right here in Oistins, guaranteeing the island religious freedom and its own taxes.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-172928e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"172928e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Sugarcane and the Dark Ages<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-054b569 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"054b569\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">In addition to tobacco cultivation, Barbados quickly shifted its focus to <strong>sugar cane<\/strong>. Unfortunately, this also brought with it <strong>massive import of slaves from Africa<\/strong>, who toiled in inhumane conditions on the plantations. It was thanks to sugar that Barbados became one of the <strong>the richest colonies<\/strong> in the world.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"12\">In the year <strong>1834 slavery was abolished<\/strong>, which was a major turning point. But it took another hundred years for the island to fully stand on its own feet. The year <strong>1966<\/strong> then went down in history in golden letters, because Barbados gained <strong>independence<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"13\">Recently, in<strong> 2021<\/strong>, Barbados became <strong>republic<\/strong> and definitively broke away from the British Queen as head of state. Today it is a self-confident country that still holds on to its British traditions, such as a love of cricket and driving on the left.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f55764 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\"
